Diverse Sexualities Access Project
Diverse Sexualities Access Project
This project aimed to help youth and community services to be more responsive to young gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) people. You might not think that there are many GLBT people in your neighbourhood or using your local services but you would be wrong. Most GLBT people do not fit the stereotype that you might see on television of someone dancing in the Mardi Gras parade wearing pink hotpants and covered in glitter. Some do, but most live their lives much as you do, working, relaxing with friends and family and getting on with life.
Young people who find themselves attracted to people of the same sex have to deal with all the usual feelings of anxiety and confusion that all young people face but they also must come to terms with a society which often treats them as different, strange or undesirable. They can easily become alienated and isolated just at a time when it is most important to maintain their social networks as a support during their transition into adulthood.
The project worked with local services to make sure that they were more responsive and supportive of young people in the choices that they make about their own sexual identities. Youth and community services can ensure that these young people are able to claim their right to be a part of their communities and share their own wisdom, knowledge and uniqueness with the people living around them.
The project was a four year funded WSAAS project which is now complete. For information about the project contact Spyns on 47 218520.
