Aboriginal Services - Sewing – Year 10 Formal Dresses

This program is a partnership between Cranebrook High School, TAFE and Spyns Inc.

Year 10 girls have the opportunity to design and create their own Year 10 formal dresses with the assistance of a TAFE teacher.

The girls do everything from scratch from the initial design drawings, making the patterns, selecting fabric and then sewing the dress, and finishing the details.

The process gives the girls a practical skill set as well as developing attention to detail, patience and perseverance. It is great for building confidence and self-esteem. The girls enjoy the time out of the regular learning environment and this program has consistently improved the participants’ attendance, retention and school results as well as their classroom behavior.

This program has run for several years with excellent results.
